Speed Work: finding and using your gears

 

As a sprinter, a middle-distance swimmer or as a long distance freestyler, there are different gears within the athlete that are optimum in any given race, and at any given time within each race. While your coach is well tuned to the use of speed variation, it is ultimately up to you to read your body's response to the demands of an event and to optimize your conditioning.  Working with the clock, focusing on fatigue management and developing the correct mental conditioning will all contribute to greater success.
